Get up close and personal with the magnificent Ukko-Luosto Fell and savour the pristine atmosphere of old-growth forests by bike. You might work up a sweat when climbing Pikku-Luosto and Lampivaara Hill, but you'll be rewarded with spectacular scenery, a delicious treat in the café and the rush of a downhill ride. When the snow and rime start working their magic on trees, Pikku-Luosto and Lampivaara are transformed into truly enchanting landscapes. At Lampivaara, you can also try your hand at digging for amethysts on a guided tour at the Lampivaaran Amethyst Mine. The trail starts at Luostonportti for those approaching from the ski slopes, running above the Ukko-Luosto parking area and over Pikku-Luosto toward Lampivaara. The return route follows the Lampivaara service road. The recommended direction of travel is counterclockwise. The trail runs alongside a ski track in some places and also follows summer trails on its own. The trail is marked by blue plowing markers and there are brown metal guide signs at crossroads.

Safety information

Winter bike trails are also open to hikers. and this is a popular trail, so you are likely to encounter other trail users. Because they are moving faster on the trail, bikers must yield to trail users on foot. On hard-pack snow, downhill speeds can be very high, so please give special consideration to the other trail users. Depending on the weather conditions, the more open sections of the trail may be blown over by snow and the trail can be difficult to navigate after snowfall. Winter biking requires the use of warm gear and warm clothing for breaks. For more information, visit the Hiking in Finland section:  https://www.nationalparks.fi/en_GB/hikinginfinland

Turn-by-turn directions

The starting point of the route is in Luostonportti, from where it runs on the right side of a ski track in the forest. After about 300 meters, it branches off to the right of the track and continues uphill towards Ukko-Luosto. The route runs right on the edge of the treeless fell area, then through a small hut area. After the parking lot of Ukko-Luosto, the tour section of the route begins. Cross the ski track and then go uphill towards Lampivaara. The route follows the left side of the track. After a kilometre from the parking lot, you will cross the border of the Pyhä-Luosto National Park. The route takes you to the lean-in shelter in Lampivaara. The way back follows a supply path in the forest, on the left side of the road, and returns to the beginning of the tour, to the parking lot of Ukko-Luosto. The recommended direction of travel is counterclockwise, which makes the difficult, winding, and uneven uphill sections a little easier and safer. The route is maintained once a week from mid-December to late April.

Directions

The starting point Luostonportti can be reached by driving 500 meters uphill towards the ski slopes from Lapland Hotel Luostotunturi in Luosto village. Before the slopes the street goes under a bridge, and after you will see the Luostonportti starting point on the left. There is a parking lot at the starting point. An alternative starting point is the Ukko-Luosto parking area which can be found when turning on Ukko-Luostontie slightly less than 2 km from Luosto when driving towards Pyhä. See Pyhä-Luosto National Park directions and maps.

Parking

There is a parking lot at the starting point.
