At Lampivaara, you can also try your hand at digging for amethysts on a guided tour at the Lampivaaran Amethyst Mine. The trail starts at Luostonportti for those approaching from the ski slopes, running above the Ukko-Luosto parking area and over Pikku-Luosto toward Lampivaara. The return route follows the Lampivaara service road. The trail is marked by blue plowing markers and there are brown metal guide signs at crossroads.

The route starts at Luostonportti, from where it runs in the forest on the right side of the skiing track. About 300 meters from the starting point, the route diverges to the right of the skiing track and starts to ascend towards the side of Ukko-Luosto. The route runs up to the tree line, passes by a small cottage area and turns right just before the Ukko-Luosto parking area. The route meanders through the forest on the side of Ukko-Luosto, crosses the almost treeless top of Pikku-Luosto before and arriving to Lampivaara lean-to. The return route runs in the forest on the left side of the Lampivaara service road, and joins the arrival route after the Ukko-Luosto parking area. Route can be walked in either direction. However we recommend walking counterclockwise, because it is easier to walk uphill with snowhshoes on the steeper slopes. Alternative starting place is Ukko-Luosto parking area.
Route marking and signage: blue poles, brown metal signs at intersections.
The route is moderately demanding, due to its altitude differences. Weather conditions (snowfall and wind) can make the route more demanding. There is no maintenance on the route, but the beginning and end of the route runs on the winter cycling route, which is maintained once a week.

The starting point Luostonportti can be reached by driving 500 meters uphill towards the ski slopes from Lapland Hotel Luostotunturi in Luosto village. An alternative starting point is the Ukko-Luosto parking area which can be found when turning on Ukko-Luostontie slightly less than 2 km from Luosto when driving towards Pyhä. See Pyhä-Luosto National Park directions and maps.
