Gold

In search of the world’s purest gold – the one found in northern Lapland

Thousands of stories tell of the famous golden rivers and the legendary gold diggers of the North. The first gold rush took place on the River Ivalojoki in 1869 and the rush to Lemmenjoki started in 1945, as men returning from the war were tempted to try their luck in the goldfields. Gold-diggers still reside in the area, and every now and then some lucky chap finds a nugget or two.

Pay a visit to the Gold Prospector Museum in Tankavaara, which is the only international museum in the World displaying past and present of gold panning and prospecting. You also have an opportunity to experience the excitement of panning for gold in a series of guided trips in Saariselkä and Lemmenjoki areas. Did you know that you get to keep any gold you find?
